We Don't Train Dogs. We Heal Relationships.
At Vándor Paws, we believe every behavioral problem is a communication problem — and every communication problem can be solved.

Who We Are
Vándor Paws was founded by Laura Gaitan in 2026 with a single conviction: dogs don't need to be controlled — they need to be understood.
We are not traditional dog trainers. We are behavioral therapists for dogs and the families who love them. Our work doesn't end when your dog sits on command. It begins there.
What Traditional Dog Training Looks Like
Most people's experience with dog training follows a familiar pattern:
- A trainer comes in (or you go to a class)
- Your dog is taught to respond to commands — sit, stay, heel, down
- Corrections are used when the dog doesn't comply
- Treats are used as rewards when they do
- Sessions end. You go home. The dog "knows the commands."
And then, a few weeks later, the pulling starts again. The barking at the door. The jumping on guests. The anxiety when left alone.
Why? Because traditional training addresses behavior on the surface. It doesn't ask why the dog is doing what it's doing — it only asks how to stop it.
| What you see | What the trainer does | What's actually happening |
|---|---|---|
| Dog pulls on leash | "No" + correction | Dog is overwhelmed by the environment |
| Dog barks at strangers | Punishment or "quiet" command | Dog is anxious, not aggressive |
| Dog jumps on people | Knee to the chest, ignored | Dog is seeking connection |
| Dog destroys furniture | Scolding after the fact | Dog is bored, understimulated, or stressed |
The dog learns to suppress the behavior. The root cause remains.
The Gentle Parenting Approach to Dog Behavior

Gentle parenting — a philosophy originally developed for raising children — teaches us that behavior is communication. A child who acts out isn't "bad." They're struggling to express something they don't have words for.
Dogs are the same.
Our approach is rooted in:
Understanding Before Responding
Before we address any behavior, we ask: What is this dog trying to tell us? Barking, pulling, aggression, anxiety — these are symptoms. We look for the source.
Relationship Over Compliance
We don't want your dog to behave because they fear consequences. We want them to feel safe, understood, and connected to your family — because that's what actually creates lasting change.
Science-Based Methods
Everything we do is grounded in ethology (the study of animal behavior), attachment theory, and modern behavioral science. No dominance theory. No alpha rolls. No aversive tools.
We're Not Dog Trainers. We're Behavioral Therapists — for Your Whole Family.

Here's the truth most trainers won't tell you: your dog isn't the only one who needs to change.
When a dog pulls on a leash, the human on the other end pulls back — increasing tension, increasing arousal, making everything worse. When a dog barks at guests, the family's nervous reaction amplifies the dog's alarm. When a dog is anxious about being alone, the frantic goodbye ritual at the door tells them something really is wrong.
Dogs are exquisitely sensitive to us. They read our body language, our energy, our routines. They adapt to us — which means they also absorb our stress, our inconsistencies, and our confusion.
This is why we work with the whole family.
Our sessions involve everyone who lives with the dog. We look at:
- How each family member interacts with the dog
- What the dog's daily routine looks and feels like
- What the environment communicates to the dog
- What emotional needs are not being met — on both sides
We then work together — dog and family — to build a shared language. A new way of being together.
"A well-behaved dog is a byproduct of a well-connected family."
